STA Swimming Teaching - Award Courses

Course Fee: £350

Course Dates: We are flexible with the course dates which can vary from a 4 days long intensive to part time (mornings,evenings,weekends,combined). As long as the required contact and non contact hours and teaching practises are done, we can tailor the course around your available time!

Swimming Teaching - Award

Ofqual Title: STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching (QCF)

SQA Title: STA Professional Award in Teaching Swimming at SCQF Level 6


The Swimming Teaching - Award aims to produce teachers that can teach up to 10 beginners

and deliver the STAnley Series of awards, as well as the Octopus and Goldfish Series of STA’s

International Learn to Swim Programme. They may also act as an assistant swimming teacher

and can teach larger classes or advanced skills under the direct supervision of a swimming teacher

qualified to certificate level.


 Be of 16 years of age or older

 Hold current membership with STA

 Hold the Safety Award for Teachers qualification or acceptable equivalent

 Hold either the Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults

certificate (available online at or acceptable equivalent

Note: If the requested pre-requisites are not supplied within 12 months of the course end date, the

qualification will expire

Validity of Award

The qualification does not have an expiry date.

To remain as an STA approved swimming teacher, and to receive the benefit of STA public liability

insurance, holders of the qualification are required to:

1. Remain in membership of the STA

2. Keep knowledge up to date with regular CPDs

3. Keep their prerequisite lifesaving qualification in date

4. Regularly update their DBS.

49 Notional Learning Hours:

 28 Recommended Guided Learning Hours

 21 Non-contact Guided Learning Hours

Course Information

The Swimming Teaching - Award covers:

 Understanding the Elementary Scientific Principles Relevant to Swimming

 Planning, Preparing and Teaching Swimming

 Understanding the Principles for Safe and Equitable Coaching Practice


 Complete a portfolio and worksheet questions to the satisfaction of the course tutor

 Undertake poolside teaching during the course

 As part of an external assessment, teach a 30 minute lesson to 4 learners

 Complete a 30 question multiple-choice paper with a unit pass mark of 7/10 per unit


This qualification does not require revalidation.
